1:23 pm - Fic Recs and Rants or A Few Reasons that SpellCheck Just Isn't Good Enough

Hallo. It's been a bit longer than usual since I last posted one of these (a few days), and so I have more recs than usual. I also have a few rants.
I'm sure that anyone who has read much fic realizes that, in order to get to one good fic, one has to read several not-so-good fics. And even some of the "good" fics have their issues. So I thought I'd offer some gentle correction for those who write fics...
complement vs. compliment
I see this error ALL the time. Things like "Duo's violet sweater was the perfect compliment to his beautiful eyes." Grrrr. A compliment is a favorable remark about something. The word complement on the other hand is sort of the completion or enhancement of something. The sentence above should have been "Duo's violet sweater was the perfect complement to his beautiful eyes."
chocked vs. choked
This error has been popping up everywhere lately. I even saw it in a published English manga. For some reason, it's been decided that "I was so touched, I got all chocked up." is correct, when it should be "I was so touched, I got all choked up."
A chock (yes, this is a word) is a piece of wood that you put on either side of a vehicle's wheels to stop it from rolling. So, if you were "chocked up" that would probaby mean that someone had surrounded you with pieces of wood to prevent you from rolling around. However, if you are "choked up" that means that your emotions have risen to a point where they have overwhelmed you and you cannot breathe -- you are being choked by your emotions.
And let's do just one more today...
to lie vs. to lay
People make this mistake constantly. One fic I read recently actually had this so wrong that they had someone say it correctly and then had another character "correct" them. I almost expired on the spot. I think this error is partially caused by the fact that the past tense of "to lie" (in this context) is "lay" rather than "lied" (which is the past tense of the verb meaning "to tell an untruth"). And, of course, they are both related to things that are reclining (I couldn't really think of a good alternative word to describe this action, so this doesn't fit entirely but was the best I could come up with).
So...
The verb to lie should be used when the subject of sentence is the one that is reclining. That is, the one acting is also the one reclining. For example, "The book lies on the table", "Wufei lay on the bed" (NEVER "lays" on the bed), "The puppy is lying on the rug".
The verb to lay should be used when someone is causing someone or something else to recline. That is, the one acting is NOT the one reclining. For example, "Duo lays the book on the table", "Treize laid Wufei tenderly on the bed" (see how the past tense here is "laid" -- this is related to the slang phrase "to get laid"), "Heero is laying the puppy on the rug". Basically, "to lay" means "to put down", while "to lie" means "to put oneself down". Sort of.
Alright. Enough of this. See how many of the above errors you can spot in the following fics... Because I do still rec fics if they are good enough to overcome such issues.

Hello all.
First, I want to point out that I do not at all feel compelled to post in my lj, so that has nothing to do with my second point. Second, as many of you know, I spend the vast majority of my time (including a great deal of time that isn't even free) reading fanfics. Mostly gw, but still. And so, I have decided to use my journal for posting recs on fics as I read. They'll probably come out pretty slowly as I'm sure I'll end up reading a great many fics that aren't worth posting. Also, don't expect the ultimate greatness out of these fics. Sometimes even a single line in a fic can make me want to share it with others. But I do promise that, no matter what, I will have read the entirety of any fic that I rec. And that these fics (unless otherwise clearly labeled) are all complete.

Finally, we come to my latest fic. A drabble, also VF, also written for a challenge in the vf_scribbles lj community. This time the theme was music, and a 100 word requirement was added. The original of this drabble was only 46 words, counting the 3 word title. It took some work to get to 100 words. I include the original here for reference and/or comparison.
Again, I lay no claims to the Viewfinder universe that Yamane Ayano has done such a beautiful job on.

9:18 am - Solving Problems

Now, for an entirely different fandom. This is a VF (Viewfinder) fic that I wrote for a challenge on the vf_scribbles lj. The theme was Mathematics (how could I resist?), and there was a 75 minute time-limit. For some reason, I am inordinately proud of this fic. I need counseling.
There has been one change to the original, due to my lack of research into the various extant denominations of paper money in Japan. Sadly, the 50,000 yen note does not exist. I was greatly tempted to leave it in and call it artistic license. Curse this conscience of mine.
Oh, almost forgot... I do not own anything associated with the Viewfinder universe, although I hope to buy the manga sometime soon. Props to Yamane Ayano. You go girl.

This first group of ficlets was written under the alias "kaxxi_ryo" for the Die x Shinya ficlet challenge at the blanketfort, an lj, an invite-only irc channel, and a website all rolled into one. Each ficlet had to be exactly 250 words, which was a ton of fun. Go to the website (click on the picture at the entrance page to get in), click on the stuff icon, and then look under challenges to see all the other ficlets. There are some great ones. For a good laugh, read "The Silver Stick" and it's "sequel" by lime (aka LilyCharlotte).
WARNING: this site is not terribly work safe. Blame lime. Not my fault.
For those not in the know, Die and Shinya are members of a Japanese rock band, Diru or Dir En Grey or D.E.G. And the blanketfort is jrock centered. Despite this, I really don't know much about jrock. ^.^

Yes, it's shocking, I know. I'm actually posting to my lj. But, gargs has created a new layout for my lj, and it has become too pretty to resist. Plus, I thought it might be nice to collect the few fics and ficlets that I have written in one location for ease of reference. Namely, here.
Therefore, there will very shortly be several posts with each of my fics. Which most have of you have probably already read. Plus, one new drabble that I just wrote. More VF!
